My home is in Nidderdale, the picturesque valley of the
River Nidd in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. The Nidd
valley stretches from the river's source in the wild
moorland below Great Whernside past the magnificent
brooding ice age formations of Brimham Rocks to the lush
open pastures of the Plain of York.
At the centre of Nidderdale lies the market town of
Pateley Bridge. It's narrow High Street is home to many
shops that serve the needs of both the local population
and the many tourists that flock to the area throughout
the year.
Squash in Pateley Bridge is available at the Nidderdale
Recreation Centre, the local Harrogate Borough Council
sports centre, located at Nidderdale High School. Pateley
bridge squash club has teams in both the local leagues,
the Hambleton
Ales North Yorkshire Squash League and the KallKwik
Harrogate Squash League.
Matches in both leagues are between teams of three
players with matches at Pateley nominally starting at 7:20pm.
All matches for each league are played on a particular
night with Thursday being the night for the Hambleton
Ales North Yorkshire Squash League, and Monday or Tuesday the night
for the KallKwik Harrogate Squash League. In addition to the
league matches both leagues hold a cup competition in
which teams comprise five players.
After matches the leagues require that the home team
provides hospitality for the visitors. For clubs with
their own facilities the hospitality is provided 'on-site'
but for clubs such as ours the teams repair to a local
hostelry. After matches at Pateley we take the visitors a
couple of miles down the valley to the Half Moon Inn at
Fellbeck where the home made food and well kept
traditional beers send many a visiting team home well
pleased with their visit, even after they have lost!!
Send for more information about both social and team
squash in Pateley Bridge. If you visit the area on
holiday there will usually be somebody around to give you
a game.
Nidderdale is the home to one of the many cricket leagues
in Yorkshire. The Nidderdale
Cricket League started with a few local teams in 1913.
Over the years there have been fluctuating fortunes for
the league but it is now flourishing. In 1999 the league
added a seventh division when teams in the Wensleydale
League decided to apply en bloc for membership. The
league is now one of the largest in the country with 54
member clubs fielding 84 teams.
My club is Glasshouses
Cricket Club, one of the founder members of the
league. The club fields one team in the Nidderdale League
on a Saturday and one team in the Harrogate Evening
League on a Wednesday. It also fields a number of junior
teams and is always looking for new senior and junior
members. The
Secretary can provide more details about activities
at the club.
Genealogy -
Account of descent from ancestor by enumeration of
intermediate persons, pedigree; investigation of
pedigrees; plant's or animal's line of development from
earlier forms. From the Greek genea - race.
The branches of my family
tree spread to many parts of the country. My
ancestors were employed in a diverse range of occupations.
The story of how the members of each generation met their
partners and what their lives were like can only be
surmised. Contemporary documents can give some clues but
the daily life of each person will remain a mystery.
Another of my hobbies is Amateur
Radio. My callsign is G4LXU. My main interest in the
hobby is contesting. Along with my wife, G4JKY, and her
father, G4IEY, we run the Queen Mary Contest Group under
the callsign G6QM.
